Day 1: Day 1: TÁRREGA - TAÜLL

Thursday, July 23, 2009

Today begins our getaway from weekend in the Vall de Boí, where the highlight of the trip will be the visit to the Aigüestortes National Park and the route through the Romanesque churches of the Vall de Boí, declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
We left in the afternoon, very early, since we want to get to Taüll soon so we can see the church of Sant Climent, the most prominent place in the town.
Taüll is a very small town in the Vall de Boí in the region of Alta Ribagorza, in the Lleida Pyrenees of Catalonia. It is quite high so if we want to do some route through the area it is best to go in summer if we do not want to be very cold and risk finding snow.
These days we will stay at the Rantiner, a hotel in Taüll. After about two hours of travel surrounded by mountain landscapes, swamps and forest we reach the town at sunset.

The first thing that catches your attention when you reach the town is the Church of Sant Climent, the most emblematic and well-known of the Catalan Romanesque. Dating from the 12th century, it stands out in the interior for having the image of the central apse: the Pantocrator of Taüll (the original is in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia in Barcelona). To access the church you will not have problems since it is at the foot of the road and there is a parking lot in front.

After this brief visit to the church we will leave our bags to the hotel, from where we have good views of the Church, and at night we will have dinner at the town that has a good offer of restaurants. Upon returning to the hotel we could enjoy the illuminated church of Sant Climent.
