Day 3: FUSSEN - OBERAMMERGAU - MUNICH

Sunday, November 18, 2012

Today we could have taken advantage of the bed and get up a little later, but as it happens to us whenever we are on vacation, we think that it is best to set the alarm clock and take advantage of the time we have visiting things and “living” the holidays to the fullest and more today that we have a "icing" as is the Tale town of Oberammergau.
We collect our things and before taking the car, which we have parked at the door of the Apartment Scheibel Füssen, we go to the center of Fussen looking for a cafeteria where they give us that breakfast that they have not given us in the apartment.
As we move forward, we find a city that still sleeps at almost 8 in the morning.
Yes it is Sunday, but we are surprised by that tranquility and that silence that is breathed in the heart of the city.

Tranquility in the center of Fussen

We are lucky and as soon as we enter the main street, we find a pastry shop / cafe where, even halfway, they serve us a couple of pastries, a coffee with milk and a long coffee for 8.10 '- euros.
With this shot of energy we retrace our steps, we get in our rental car in Bavaria, we turn on the GPS and we go back a little from southern Bavaria.
This time we are on our way to Wieskirche or Wies a church that is 25 kilometers from Fussen that is a jewel of the Rococo and part of it is a World Heritage Site.

It takes us half an hour or so to arrive, crossing landscapes that, although we don't want to, leave us with our mouths open.
They remind us again, as happened yesterday to those landscapes that we liked so much on our trip to Austria.
Once we arrive, we see that it is 9 in the morning and at 9.30 am the mass begins, so we do not have much time to make the visit, since at the moment that the mass begins, they do not allow visits to tourists.

Wieskirche: One of the great jewels of the Rococo

We see several parked cars and people who talk animatedly, we deduce that they are the ones who just left the mass at 8 in the morning. And without more, we do not think much about starting to walk to enter as soon as possible.
We had the idea of meeting a church in the middle of a field, lonely ... And quite the opposite of that, it is in the middle of more houses, with souvenir shops on the sides. And although that subtracts a little spirituality, it can not fail to surprise who visits.
The interior is impressive ... And if not, look ...

Wieskirche interior

We are not too long, since we have big plans for today, but before taking the car again, we go around the area, to breathe again that “clean” air that we like so much.

Wieskirche surroundings

And before the 9:30 am Mass begins, we return to take the rental car, this time with a destination that arouses us a lot of curiosity and that we are wanting to know: the story town of Oberammergau, the town of the painted houses or story houses.
It has certainly been one of the cherries of our trip to bavaria.
As soon as we reach the city, we realize that in the parking carts, they indicate that those in the city center of Oberammergau They are paid and the first, which is only 5 minutes walk from the center is free, so we do not think much and leave parked the one who is being our travel companion.
As soon as we arrived at the town, proper, we were left with our mouths open, surprised with everything we were seeing.
Definitely Oberammergau It is one of the great surprises of trip to bavaria.

First impressions of the story town of Oberammergau

Details of one of the houses of Oberammergau

At the beginning we thought that the best to go through the Tale town of Oberammergau It was guided by the map we carried in our guide, but after seeing what we were seeing, we decided that it was best to start wandering around and lose ourselves among those works and art that appeared behind each corner.

The Passion in Oberammergau

Incredible paintings in the fairytale town of Oberammergau

Posing in Oberammergau

There are several other things that this highlights Oberammergau town and one of them is The Passion of Christ, which is represented every 10 years. It was last performed in 2010, so in 2020 we have a new appointment right here!

Consulting the guide taking advantage of some sun rays in Oberammergau

Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Oberammergau

Another characteristic of this town is the wood carvings. Most stores Tale town of Oberammergau they sell and exhibit true wonders that we were deprived of for being Sunday.
We thought that they would open for being such a tourist site, but no, they took it at heart and remained closed during our entire visit.
Another reason to return and buy some of the wonders that we could only see through the windows.
Once we arrived at the Church of San Pedro and San Pablo we were a little lost looking for the famous painted houses of Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. And after a few turns to the plane of Oberammergau town, we saw that we only had to continue along that same street and when it seems that you leave the town and arrive at a residential area there they are ...

Oberammergau

We could not stay otherwise than with the mouth open, as on many other occasions, but here we had been here for more than an hour.
And we still had a good time!

We stayed quite a while in the area, looking for the best way to take some photos and enjoying the tranquility of the time we have traveled.
We love to meet here, alone, enjoying this sunny day in the Oberammergau town which is leaving us with such a good taste, that we are considering coming back shortly to make another tour of the area.

Landscapes of Oberammergau

From here we go straight in search of the famous Pilatushaus of Oberammergau which is said, and now we can attest, that as you get closer, it seems that you are in front of a 3D image.

After this, we only have one last lap to say goodbye to this dream town.

Pilatushaus in Oberammergau

We return to the parking area where we have the car, but before we stop at a gas station to buy water and candies and this is where we look that the price of gasoline is much more expensive than in Spain and yet, candies and snacks are cheaper.
If you do not have a car, a good option to visit the town of Oberammergau is to book a day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle by bus with a Spanish guide from Munich where you also visit this town.
Once we are in the car, we indicate on the GPS the address of the English Garden in Munich.
The idea is to go there before eating and thus take advantage of the few hours of light allowed by the time we are in.
From here the vast majority of the route is done by highway, so the landscapes change and become more monotonous.
We are late in arriving at Munich Just over 1 hour and shortly before doing so, we changed our mind and decided that it is best to go directly to the hotel and after checking to get started to visit the city.
The entrance to the city becomes quite bearable and just when we reach the height of Hauptbahnhof Station we find parking in an area that is free on weekends.
So looking at the map and knowing that we are less than 5 minutes from our accommodation, the Hotel Eder, we take out our bags and get underway to discover the city that awaits us ... Munich!!
After check-in, settle in our room and rest for a few minutes, we start again, with the idea of walking for a while in the Altstadt and in Marienplatz before going to eat.

About to enter the most central part of Munich

Christmas is already breathing in the atmosphere!

Almost without realizing it, we arrive at the famous Frauenkirche whose domes are visible from anywhere in the Altstadt.

Frauenkirche Munich

At this time we prefer not to enter, we will have time and continue walking through the Kaufinger Strasse where we are soaking up a Christmas atmosphere that begins to emerge with the assembly of the famous Christmas stalls of Munich that we will not be able to enjoy by opening the day after we leave.
Another reason to return ...

Christmas showcase on the move !! Munich

And almost half clueless, finally, we find the blackened facade of Neog Rathaus neo-Gothic Munich.

Neues Rathaus. Munich

When setting up the Christmas stalls it is difficult to frame it to take a photo in which the cranes, stairs ...
So we settle for the first ones we take out and follow our path.

An interesting option if it is your first time in the city and you want to know its history better is to book a city tour with a guide in Spanish or if you do not have much time to book the tourist bus.
This time with a fixed goal, we are looking for the famous Hofbraühaus of Munich the most famous brewery in Bavaria and probably from the world.
At the beginning it is a little difficult for us to locate ourselves, but thanks to a very attentive citizen who helps us, we managed to reach the door.

And finally we arrive at the Hofbraühaus. Munich

Once inside, we look for a free table, something that costs us a little because it is the time it is and once we get and ask for a letter in English ... the gastronomic moment of the day arrives !!

Interior of the Hofbraühaus

We ordered a dish of the house, with 3 types of sausages, another with a bratswurt with sauerkraut, a plate of baked potatoes, plus a glass of half-liter beer and a coke for 25.55 '- euros.

Mmm ... all great! In the famous Hofbraühaus

Once we rest for a while, we take a tour of the place, which left us totally amazed, not only by the atmosphere, but also by the architecture, the live music ...

After this, we headed towards the Isar Gate.

Surroundings of the Isar Gate

At this point we are beginning to continue walking aimlessly, so we are "stumbling" with things that were not planned and we are glad to be able to locate them, before, tomorrow, get one hundred percent with these visits. One of them is the Viktualienmarkt, a market that began as a farmers market and today is one of the best known centers for culinary art lovers.

Viktualienmarkt

When we get here it is already starting to get dark, so we already see that we don't have many hours of light left and those that remain have to take advantage of them.
As in all escapes, time is something that plays against us and many times, we try to fight against it, but without success.

Viktualienmarkt surroundings

We return to the Neues Rathaus

Once we return to live up to the famous Frauenkirche, we decided to take the opportunity to visit it and not wait for tomorrow.

Frauenkirche

While inside we can only be surprised to discover a cartel that indicates that by paying you can download an application on your mobile to listen to the history of the Church.
These churches will never cease to amaze us 🙂

The application for Iphone in Frauenkirche

After a couple of laps, we found the famous devil's footprint and we can't resist checking its size. Update 2019: thanks to Bethlehem, a reader, we know that the footprint is covered under a pole, although it is perceived that this is the place where it is located.

Footprint of the Devil ...

At the exit of the Frauenkirche we find again the Christmas stalls and although they are closed it does not stop making the atmosphere become something more Christmas.

Christmas stalls in Munich

The streets, already lit with the typical date lights and shops with ornaments, make us think that Christmas dates are getting closer.

Christmas, Christmas ...

From here, seeing that we still have a few hours to go to dinner, we decided to go walking to the Hofgarten and Odeonplatz area where, when we arrived, the afternoon is already falling but we do not stop seeing people walking and enjoying the end of week in Munich.

Odeonplatz Munich

Odeonplatz Munich

Improvised concert at the gates of the Hofgarten ... including a piano !!

It is not very cold, so we chose to walk for a while more inside the park, where we even see some boyfriends doing the photo report.

Hofgarten

Hofgarten Munich

It's almost 6 in the afternoon, so we go back to Marienplatz to take some photos at night and, with a last minute decision, take the subway to go to the BMW Museum of Munich which according to the guide closes at 8 in the afternoon.

The night comes to Munich ...

Walking through the city center

We take the subway and after paying 2.50 '- euros per ticket we go to the BMW Museum.
It does not take more than 15 minutes to arrive and they leave us almost at the same door. The surprise we take when we arrive and tell us that they will close in less than 5 minutes!
They just let us go around the top and see an exhibition they have.
We will have to settle for this 🙁

BMW Museum Munich

It's almost 7 in the afternoon and today we have a very full day, so we take the subway again and once we are in Marienplatz we stop for dinner at one of those fast food restaurants that we only visit on our trips ... a McDonals! !
After a “ligerita” dinner, we return to the Hotel Eder with the fixed idea of resting and above all finish planning what tomorrow will be our last day of the trip to bavaria.
