Day 4: DERRY - GLENVEAGH CASTLE - ASSARANCAGH CASCADE - GLEN GESH PASS - SLIEVE LEAGUE - SLIGO ABBEY - WESTPORT

Monday, September 5, 2011

Today we started our day Travel to Ireland by rental car With a good Irish breakfast at the Knockranny Lodge Guesthouse.
At 9 in the morning we were already on our way to Glenveagh Castle, where we arrived after 1 hour and a half of walking.
Upon arrival we have left the rental car in Ireland in the parking lot and we have gone straight to the visitor center. There we have paid 3 euros per person that costs the bus that takes you to the entrance of Glenveagh Castle.
If you do not want to pay, you can walk for 4 km, until you reach the entrance. The truth is that the landscape is impressive, but for lack of time we have preferred the first option. Of course, we have left for another occasion the guided tour inside the Glenveagh Castle.

We have preferred to spend the time we had in making a visit around the castle and especially the gardens, which is what interests us most about this visit.

Glenveagh Castle

We find spectacular and well-kept gardens, where we enjoy a very pleasant walk.

After being there for more than an hour and a half we have taken a bus to return to the visitor center.
And there we have taken advantage of eating a couple of sweets with coffee that have made us feel great.

Stop at the Visitor Center to fill the stomach

We are already seeing that today it will be our turn to eat like yesterday, because being the time it is: lunchtime, it will catch us on the way to the next safe stop.
After resting for a while and filling the stomach, we return to the rental car and we are going to Assarancagh Waterfall, where it takes us an hour and a little to arrive.
We are going through some impressive landscapes, that although the clouds begin to darken it, they offer us a snack of what we will see later in Glen Gesh Pass.

There we met some more tourist and after taking a picture, we got into the rental car to make an impromptu picnic.

And with a full stomach we go to the Glen Gesh Pass. We went through some film landscapes, which remind us a lot of Scotland.

We are going with the right time, so we decided to set off for Slieve League.
This is one of the stops that we did not have very clear whether to do it or not, but seeing that although fair, we can arrive on time, we intend to arrive anyway 🙂
We thought it would take us much less to arrive, but in the end after almost 1 hour and a half, we arrived at a parking lot that seems to be where we have to leave the rental car.
Right next to it we find a fence, which is closed, but we see that a couple of cars open it and begin to ascend.

And that is what we do, without knowing what we are going to find, above that we are going !!
And we arrive at a Slieve League parking lot from where a path starts from which we have spectacular views of the cliffs.
If we had not taken this road with the car, we would have had to climb a slope of almost 3 km !!
We leave the car on a side of the road, where we already see that there is no possibility of climbing more by car and with the black we see the sky, we decided to arm ourselves with patience, take the umbrella and start gradually ascending the cliffs of Slieve League
In less than 5 minutes it starts to rain, which is not the same as sparkling ... so we squeeze the step a bit, open an umbrella and keep going up.

The views are getting better and it is hard not to stop to admire them any longer.

We are in the rain almost more than half an hour until we return to the car, this time to get on our way to the Abbey of Sligo.

"Singing in the rain" in Slieve League

It takes us a little less than an hour and a half to arrive and during all this time it hasn't stopped raining for a moment.
This bad weather makes us lose a little desire to visit more things and seeing that it is more than 6 in the afternoon, so the Abbey is already closed, we just stop a moment ahead to see it through the gates.
From here we go to Westport, where we have our accommodation tonight, the St. Judes Lodge B&B, in our travel to Ireland. It takes us another hour and a long peak to arrive, since with the rain we have to drive somewhat slower and with more caution.
Once we check in at the St. Judes Lodge B&B, we leave our bags and go out for dinner. We drip again when we go in search of the car and end up returning to the hotel without being able to see the city: this is pending for tomorrow or for another occasion ...
Tomorrow with better weather we will decide 🙂
