Below we detail what our expenses were in a 25-day trip in Myanmar, detailed by different concepts, for those who ask how much does it cost to travel to Myanmar.

Our expenses were these:

In total we have spent € 675.05, which divided by the 25 days of stay in the country are € 13.52 per person / day thus broken down:

  • Food: 3,34€ (Most of the time we have eaten in cheap restaurants with dishes about 1500 kyats or in street stalls)
  • Accommodation: € 4.18 (almost always in a double room with private bathroom ... the budget can go down if you want to share a bathroom).
  • Transport: € 2.95 (Here are the long-distance buses that cost about 1000 kyats per hour of travel, such as ferry, taxi, bikes ...)
  • Ticket-fees: € 1.02 (mandatory tickets such as Bagan or Lake Inle ...)
  • Activities: € 1.66 (trekking and spa)
  • Miscellaneous: € 0.37 (internet, donations, flashlight, bracelets ...)

The exchange rate that we met was 1 $ = 805-820 KYATS. The change continues to fall ... in mid-October we changed to 820 kyats but by the end they had already dropped to 805 ... so you have to go to Myanmar as soon as possible!)

Here are some tips when it comes to changing money:

We understand that the country is being increasingly visited and that the opening is evident, so ATMs have already been installed in many of the most tourist spots. We leave this part of the summary because we are excited to remember how bugs they are!

  • It is best to change dollars, if they are 100 bills they will make you a better rate. You can also change euros, but the exchange rate is worse.
  • Both the street money changers, as in the guesthouse, as in the banks, notice that the tickets are perfect, and when we say this it means that the president's face cannot have a scratch, no bends and of course no mark of pen They have to be impeccable, although they put fewer problems in the bank.
  • To know the "official" exchange rate, you can check the website www.irrawaddy.org, it is quite reliable. More than what I put there do not try to get. Do not be scared if you see on any website that the change is 6 or 7 to the dollar, this change is never used.
  • When we arrived in the country, the rate was 820 per dollar. Three weeks later I was at 805 ... it's going down a lot.
  • The best option is to ask directly at a bank, there are specialized in currency exchange. In Yangon there is one near the Monsoon restaurant (85-87, Thinbyu Road). The changes are the NON-OFFICIAL (the good ones).

The tricks of the street money changers to try to deceive you are the following:

  • They will offer you a very good rate, and it will be easy to haggle with them, if so, pay close attention because they want to scam you.
  • When you finish hiring, first they give you the tickets, we to prove that they were correct we went with one of them to a store to ask. Put them in your backpack before giving your dollars.
  • They will start giving you in bundles of 10 bills, refuse because it is possible that they give you 5 in each package, even if it seems the opposite. So all the loose tickets and make your packages.
  • When you deliver your dollar bills, it counts very clearly how many you are giving. Give one by one and loudly count ONE, TWO, THREE ... In a quick move you will find that they have one less in hand than you have given them. If so, get angry and tell them that you have given the right amount. Do not lose sight of the tickets.
  • If all this does not work for them it is possible that they put problems with the tickets and in the end they do not accept the change. In that case they give you all your dollars, and when you are sure you have them, return your kyats.
  • As we say, it is best to go directly to the bank, they serve you well, you have a better exchange rate and they will not scam you. In addition, there you can find all the money changers in the city changing at a better rate what they have changed to tourists.
