Venice is one of the most charming cities in all of Europe and, although it has some distant cousins (that if the Venice of the North, that if the Venice of the East ...) is unique: there is no other like it. We have visited Venice on countless occasions (it is what you have studied half an hour from there hehe), and on each one, we have learned new tricks travelers, which we want to share. So in this post you will find a few tips for traveling to Venice and not shit.

If you want more information of Venice, visit our GUIDE TO A TRIP TO VENICE

There are two airports: the Marco Polo airport, which is properly the one in Venice, and the Treviso airport, about 40 km.

- From Marco Polo Airport: it is best to take the ATVO Airport Shuttle bus that you will find right in front of the departure port. It will leave you in Piazzale Roma, from where you can walk to the accommodation. The ticket costs € 8 (€ 15 round trip). If you want to save time buy it online, here, it costs the same! See orario.

- From Treviso Airport: there are direct buses to Piazzale Roma with the same ATVO company. The trip takes about 1 hour and can also be booked in advance, here. See schedule. You have the slowest but cheapest option: first take the urban bus number 6 to the train station (20 minutes, € 1.30, the ticket must be taken at a tobacconist or points of sale at the airport) and from there take a train to Venezia Santa Lucia (40 minutes, € 3.35).

The most expensive option is to request a private transfer (if you are traveling in a group you can leave on account).

And once in Venice, if you have little time and want to see everything, everything, everything, a good idea is to get a transport voucher, to save you stretches of alleys and many tourists. The one-day pass costs € 20, the two-day pass costs € 30, allows you to use the unlimited vaporetti and buses. You can buy it here. To calculate the route, you can use this website.

Although to move around Venice always we recommend doing it on foot.

→ Here we tell you more about transport in Venice.

Are you between 6 and 29 years old? Yeah

If you are a youngster under 30, you can buy the Rolling Venice! It is a 3-day transport card with discounts on attractions and a great price! You can also add transportation to the airport round trip. It costs € 6, plus the price of the transport package, but it is really worth it if you are going to use the transport network, to visit other islands such as Burano or Murano, or to move through the canals in Venice. More info.

To always be able to move on foot, it is essential that you choose a central area to stay. The neighborhoods (or sestieri) from San Marco, San Polo (our favorite), Cannareggio and the most central areas of Castello and Dorsoduro are the best. We leave you a map of the neighborhoods of Venice:

It is no secret that Venice accommodations are very very expensiveIf you want to save some money you can always stay in the neighbor Mestre (better near your train station), from where there are trains to Venice every few minutes. They leave from platform 1, the ticket costs € 1.30 and the trip only takes about 10 minutes. In addition the views of the arrival in Venice are very beautiful! Check schedules on the trenitalia website. You can buy the ticket at the station (at the box office or at the machines) and you must stamp it before getting on.

Here we leave you a few options of cheap accommodation in Venice.

Definitely spring and fall They are the best times to travel to Venice. If you can avoid weekends, bridges and, especially these two celebrations: the Carnival (February) and the Redeemer (July). The atmosphere will be great, the city will dress up ... but honestly, it is unbearable!

They have also recently put some lathes which, in the days of more tourist crowding, control and limit access to the city. We don't know if they really work, but apparently they have created quite controversial.

This question is very relative and usually creates certain conflicts. To look good with everyone, we say that Venice it can be visited in a single day, although it is advisable to stay at least one night.

The important is to plan The weather is fine, because in Venice there are many things to visit and time flies. Here we tell you 35 things to see and do in Venice.

For those who are passing through, we must try to get to Venice early and have all day for us. This is a possible tour for visit Venice in one day, with a start and end point at the Santa Lucia train station.

You also have the option to sign up for free tours. In Venice there are two: tour of the monumental Venice and tour of the unknown Venice.

But we always say that the mask that endorses Venice at night it is totally different to the one that takes by day. Many of the tourists are gone and the canals and streets lit by the lanterns of the worn facades are much cooler. So, if you can, stay at least one night.

¿The ideal? The ideal would be to visit Venice in 3 days, two to get to know the city and one to make an excursion to one of its islands.

Yes, Venice has more than 100 islands, although the most famous are 5: Murano, Burano, Torcello, Lido Y Giudecca. The first 3 are the most recommended and can be seen in a single day, either for free, or on a tour that for € 20, takes you at three.

To eat, nothing better than one bacari route, the typical bars of Venice, where you can go for tapas (cicchetti). Here we tell you more about the best bacari (tapas bar) in Venice. Cicchetti (pronounced chiquetti) usually cost between € 1.50 and € 3 and theirs is to accompany them with house wine (€ 1.5-3) or Spritz Aperol (€ 2.5-3).

That said, keep in mind that if you are a lot to eat, it will almost be cheaper to go to a restaurant (there are quite a few Closed menus for about € 13-16 which usually include the "coperto"). Of course, the experience of the bacari is the best of Venice (try at least one!).

And it doesn't hurt to remind you that, for nothing in the world, do you sit down to drink something in Piazza San Marco. The bars charge amazing rates (and if there is an orchestra playing ... they charge a fee for the music). Coffee and water can cost you € 20-30. Come on ... you don't feel! (unless you're not a millioneti, of course).

If you want to ride a gondola, keep in mind that the joke is going to be expensive. The Official price for 45 minutes of travel is € 80 (Although I bargained and ended up paying € 50). The gondolieri They are put in many piers on the canals and it will not be difficult to find them, although in front of the Doge's Palace in Piazza San Marco is where there is more.

One option to reduce costs is to ride a shared gondola (you can book it here). Or as a third option make an express trip in a traghetto: a gondola that crosses the Grand Canal from side to side. Obviously the journey takes a few minutes and the romance is almost nil, but uh ... it only costs € 2! You will see the piers with a green sign with the word “traghetto” in a big way.

If you are a fan of the photos of the cities from the heights, some trick is also for you. Venice, of course, does not have skyscrapers or especially tall buildings, but there are a few points from which to take photos, like these 3: the St Mark's Campanile (€ 8), the roof of the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi (free, with reservation) and the spiral staircase Contarini del Bovolo Palace (7€).

- The entrance to theSt. Mark's Basilica is free, but between March and November (when there are more tourists) you can buy a ticket with priority access here. It costs € 3 and allows you to avoid queues. For us it is a great idea.

- Venice has one of the largest and most chaotic historical centers in the world: it is impossible not to get lost because of its latticework. It is best to download the map of Venice in the app maps.me, so you can check it at any time, without having to connect to the internet. Remember to point out all the points of interest (including the bacari) before your trip to Venice.

- If you feel like going to the bathroom, prepare the wallet. Public toilets are paid (They usually cost € 1.50). We always recommend entering a bar, having a drink and something to snack on and take advantage of to make a technical stop ... put to pay, let it be eating!

- Take one with you water bottle and fill it in the fountains (there is one practically in each square). You will save yourself a little money.

- The high water (Acqua Alta) is a phenomenon that usually occurs between November and March, and where part of Venice is flooded. If it happens during your visit, do not worry: it is not dangerous, just something uncomfortable.

- Obvious advice but better to say it loud and clear: wear comfortable shoes, in Venice you will walk a lot. We've seen girls with heels and uh, we've suffered for them!

- Do you have plenty of time and want take advantage of your trip to Italy to know more cities? Chioggia, Padua, Verona and Trieste are nearby and very beautiful excursions. If you prefer to know the typical Italy, Venice is very well connected with Florence and Milan.

Venice? No, Chioggia!
