What is the first thing you think if you listen to Budapest? We have it clear: "goulash", but we are very greedy. The second? Probably your Parliament. The third? The Danube Vaaaale, but what about the room? Your spas, ohhh your spas. Traveling to the capital of Hungary and not stepping on (at least) one would have to be considered a crime. In this post we will tell you which are the best spas in Budapest and which of them is perfect for you.

If you want more information, visit our GUIDE TO A TRIP TO BUDAPEST

Before but let us tell you a couple of facts and curiosities ...

  • Did you know that Budapest was named spa town? Hungary is a land of hot springs and its capital was not going to be the exception: in Budapest there are more than 100 hot springs! So it is logical that they have taken advantage to build so many spas.
  • One tip: in all spas rent what is necessary for your visit, but almost better if you carry flip flops, a swimsuit and a hat (although this is usually used only in cold pools, where I swim, go), you will save a little money!
  • If you go with your partner see if the spa you choose has mixed pools (all that we recommend in this article are). Let's see if you choose one that does not have them and instead of a romantic evening you will be more alone than Macaulay Culkin in New York.

Now, let's see what are the best spas in Budapest:

Not only is he largest spa in EuropeIf not, your building is one of the things we recommend to see in Budapest: it is a pa-sa-da. It has about 15 swimming pools, although the best (and the most famous) are the 3 outdoor ... sure you've seen their photos a thousand times.

Tip: have night time, so it seems the perfect place to relax after a day of kicking around the city. And if it's January and there is snow, don't worry, its waters are warm, of course! The only bad thing will be the moment you have to leave, but every effort is worth it.

Where: Állatkerti körút, 9-11.

Price: Admission is HUF 5,400 (about € 16.5), although we recommend booking early (skip the line) here. It costs € 18 but it guarantees you to enter at the time and day you want.

You sound familiar? It is one of the most photographed spas in the world (it came out even in advertisements, like this one, which by the way, is very bad isn't it? Haha).

Elegant and art nouveau style, its most famous swimming pool (that of the Danone publi) is interior and surrounded by columns. But there are many more pools (and yes, many more tourists than the ones on video). It was built in 1918 and is part of the Gellert Hotel.

Tip: it is undoubtedly beautiful, but we see a very weak point and that is that the indoor pool, the most beautiful, is cold water.

Where: Kelenhegyi út, 4.

Price: the entrance costs 5,600-6,200 HUF, about € 17-19 (weekdays or weekends), although as in the previous case, we recommend you buy tickets in advance for € 19 here.

Near the previous ones, we find the Rudas Spa, quite popular in Budapest. These baths date from the 16th century, the time of the Ottoman occupation, and hence their style. Stresses its central bathroom, octagonal and on which rests a huge dome 10 meters in diameter.

Its location is a pass, at the foot of Gellert Hill and with the Danube right in front of it.

Where: Döbrentei tér, 9.

Price: the entrance of a whole day and for all the pools costs 6,200HUF (€ 19), although it is reduced if we reduce the visit in the morning.

Császár Baths (Veli Bej)

If you want to get away and try a less touristy resort (at the moment), this is a great option. It is not too big, there are only 5 swimming pools, but if you fancy some relaxation and do not mind the monumentality of the place, it is a great place.

Curiosity: they are one of the largest and oldest Turkish hot springs in Budapest (they were built in the 16th century).

Tip: if you have time we recommend you visit this spa and that of Széchenyi, they are very different but both are very worthwhile!

Where: Frankel Leó u. 35 (they are part of the Császár Hotel Budapest)

Price: € 8 the entrance of 3 hours.

Ok, these bathrooms are somewhat dated and with a decadent air, but if you are looking for an authentic place… bingo! Like the previous ones, they are thermal baths of Turkish origin of the 16th century. It is not very big but the octagonal pool under a dome is super beautiful. The best thing is that they are not very busy and that the price is more than acceptable.

Where: Fő u. 84

Price: 9€

Although it is not up to the others, we put it on the list because the entry is included in the Budapest Card. If your intention is to buy it, you have no excuse to give yourself a therapeutic bath here. And why not, compare it with some other spa in Budapest. If we go back to the 12th century, hot springs were already used in this site in an old monastery. Although it was not until 1880 when the spa itself was built.

Curiosity: Although the bathrooms are perfect for relaxing, on Saturdays at night there are parties in many of them. The so-called spartys. The Lukács spa is no exception.

Where: Frankel Leó út, 25-29.

Price: All-day admission costs 3,700 HUF (€ 11). If you go after 18, it is reduced to 3,300 HUF (€ 10). They are prices during the week, the weekend costs something else.

We remind you that if you have the Budapest Card tourist card you can enjoy discounts at the entrances of these spas (usually 20%).
